60 shots of beer in 60 minutes?
Doesn’t sound all that hardcore.
Hell, I probably consume that much if not more during a routine outing of flip cup at a random house party. (It’s amazing how much beer you can consume when your playing to de-robe some friendly co-eds.)
So a few weeks back when a reader wanted me to take a look at his company’s power hour DVD, I was eager to see just how easily I dominated the challenge.
Little did I know what kind of a night I was in for.
The Greatest DVD Ever is a production of Awesome Seriously, and is a limited edition power hour drinking game. Here’s the basics. Once you pop the disc into your DVD player, Xbox or computer a title screen appears that gives you a couple of options. You can either choose the above mentioned power hour (60 shots in 60 minutes), or go for the liver demolishing gold and try to join the century club (100 shots in 100 minutes). Pretty simple right?
That’s what I thought.
Never having gone through a full power hour before this review, I didn’t want to traverse the experience alone. So I called up one of my most trusted drinking advisers, who naturally jumped at the opportunity to get throwed on a Thursday night. Together, we gathered up a few friends, went to a buddy’s apartment and cracked open a frosty beer to pour our first shot.
The DVD opened with a Simpsons clip that had the both of us (admitedly Simpson’s trivia experts) scanning our memories to figure out the plot of the episode. In fact, we nearly forgot to take our first shot, clearly indicated by the numbered beer icon in the bottom righthand corner of the screen. Just as we downed the shot, the screen quickly changed to a scene from the movie Slapshots as a 60 second timer on the screen ticked away the moments until our next shot was due.
The next 30 minutes or so followed a similar formula.
Take a shot, argue over what movie or TV show the clip on the screen was from, take a shot. Not exactly rocket science, but there’s something to be said for easy to follow instructions.
During the course of the DVD, my advisor figured out that if we completed our mission we would have consumed roughly five beers in an hour. And while that doesn’t sound like much, the number of shots starts to take its toll on both the mind and stomach somewhere near the midway point.
Around shots 40-45, I think the both of us were really starting to feel the effects of that sweet intoxication, noticeably laughing just a little bit harder through the various on screen comedy.
Shot 55 proved to be both of our downfalls.
Around the same time I got up to use the bathroom for what seemed to be the zillionth time (an annoying by-product of the rapid consumption), my buddy was making a mad dash for another restroom to pay homage to the porcelain throne.
Feeling humbled by the experience, and pretty damn tipsy, I decided to call it a successfull night.
Here’s what I really liked about the DVD. The Simpsons intervals which signaled the throwing back of yet another shot were classic. I’d go as far as to say they were the most entertaining part of the DVD, and I think most of those in attendance agreed with me. With that being said, the rest of the DVD wasn’t short on laughs either. From Old School to Animal House, the disc was filled with comedic scenes from classic movies that kept us reminiscing through each drink. And trust me when I say that the clips get funnier the more you drink, as with most things during an alcoholic binge.
My only reservation was some random choices from movies like The Karate Kid and The Matrix that seemed out of place. I personally would have liked to see the DVD stick only to great comedic moments, and ever more so those that have to deal with beer drinking in some way. Other than a few instances, the DVD tended to deliver.
A few of us also thought the disc was a little heavy on 80’s nostalgia, so I’m hoping the next volume leans more towards the 90’s and millienial years. We also would have like to seen the introduction of music vidoes from those eras as well, as every respectable drunk loves to belt out a verse or two from some of the Billboard Top 100.
A few of my friends also noted that the game seemed more apt to be played at a setting much like the one we were at, a friendly gathering at a random apartment, rather than a busy house kegger. You really have to pay attention to what is going on on the screen, and to do so while also trying to make your way to the keg and scoping out a few hotties along the way might prove difficult. But if you’re looking to just chill out and get plastered with a small group of people, this DVD definitely packs a fun punch.
With over 220 clips that play on a random shuffle, and a price of $10 a unit, the game will fill you up on good times for a modest price. The DVD also comes with a handy shot glass that serves as the only accompaniment you’ll need for an eventful evening, minus your beverage of choice.
If you’re interested you can purchase the DVD from Tim’s website here.
The Greatest DVD ever is a definite must view if you ever have the urge to get plastered to some of the greatest TV and cinema comedies of the modern day.
And truthfully, don’t we all get that urge sometime?

I took part in the DVD. I would say that I enjoyed “The Simpsons” parts and most of the movie clips were awesome…However, some would have been better left out and like Matt said recent music videos would have been nive….. out of 10 i would probably give it a 7. I had fun!
